...Worm Holes are a theoretical spacial construct that allows for the folding of space time such that travel time between distant parts of the universe is decreased. Here, entering a worm hole transports you to another puzzle elsewhere in the book. As indicated by the address below the worm hole. When you decide that you want to enter a worm hole, which you do by choice and not by force, you must then follow the rules of the puzzle space to which you travel when you exit the worm hole. You must always exit and be able to exit, without overlapping previously drawn segments, in the same direction your were traveling when you entered. Of course, you may go back through the same worm hole or a different one that takes you on a journey through many different puzzles. If it is a puzzle you have already completed, remember the cardinal rules of Celestialis™: You may cross over single lines but you may not pass through loops, loops may not touch, lines may not overlap, you may not go out of bounds or off the course (this includes previous line segments you have drawn in the completion of the previous puzzle). Also note, if it is now impossible, for example, to ring the Saturn planet, then that is too bad, your result is a null puzzle on the original puzzle. YOU MUST END UP BACK AT THE END STAR of the original puzzle on which you started, so you will have to get back there either by retracing your steps or by finding a new path back. You may enter and exit worm holes on the x or y-axis of your choice insofar as you do not overlap segments previously drawn. It’s a good idea to check before you enter a worm hole to see what you might be getting yourself into. Also, for the first time in Celestialis™, two people can be working on the same puzzle at the same time! (see figure 17)

Celestialis 2: Celestial Obstacle: Black Hole

...Black Holes are theoretical areas of space that have such a strong gravitational pull that nothing, even visible electromagnetic energy can escape their pull. Therefore, here you will be pulled into any and all black holes any time you come near their event horizon. Once inside, the space-time singularity at the center will allow you to choose one of four directions to be propelled out beyond the event horizon. Be careful, you can only exit a black hole 4 times. (see figure 16)

...Pulsars are massive rotating neutron stars. When you encounter them they have a unique property in all of Celestialis™. You enter them and they send you out on the z-axis. Therefore, to complete the puzzle you must re-enter the same pulsar or another pulsar on the z-axis and come back out in the x or y-axis. (see figure 15)

...Pluto, recently re-categorized as a dwarf planet, is usually the furthest large planet-like body from the sun (sometimes it’s orbit is closer than Neptune’s) and also the smallest. Presently, Pluto is, perhaps, most famous for it’s large moon Charon. Therefore here, you will have to pass between each pairing of Pluto with its moon. You may not pass directly through either. (see figure 14)

It has rings like Saturn, though not as prominent, and is known as an ice giant. ...Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and famous for its mobile red spot and tremendous gravitational field. When it comes to interacting with Jupiter the gravitational pull is so strong that if you are traveling toward it, it will pull you all the way to its sphere of influence at which point you will loop and then angle away. You may not pass through the sphere of influence or you will be drawn into the planet and trapped. (see figure 10)

...Comets are unique celestial objects, renegades in your universe & may be looped, not boxed, for bonus points. They are the only celestial objects that can be looped. Remember “looping” is the term used to describe the maneuver you execute to turn. The result is the creation of a loop. To loop a comet, you need only loop the head and not the tail. You are permitted to loop comets & score a bonus for each one. You do not get bonus points for boxing in comets. Take care, it is easy to forget when you loop a comet that you are looping instead of boxing and mess up the rest of your mission. See figure 8.

...Earth is your home planet, and you will want to pass through it each time you see it, but only once per Earth. You may pass through along either axis (X) or (Y). You may not pass through using the segments that create a loop. ...Mercury is a lonely planet and survives in Celestialis™ only when paired. To achieve this pairing, you must complete the boxing in maneuver demonstrated in figure 5. Also, of course, the atmosphere is toxic to you, so you may not pass through Mercury nor the box used to pair them. Notice in the figure that loops may be used to make the corners of the box, but they need not be. The box that pairs the Mercury planets must be a pure quadrilateral. Sometimes the two may be far apart which increases the difficulty.

Practice Makes Perfect

Now, take some time to try out a few Open Universe puzzles (see Puzzles 1.0--1.5 available now in Celestialis™ -- buy book here) for practice and to get the hang of it. When you think you are done, go back and look for errors of overlap, loop size, or failure to loop to change direction. You might be surprised that you missed a few here and there.

Note: A puzzle is considered null or worth a value of 0 for the sake of scoring if you violate any of the four cardinal rules: not looping to turn, overlapping, traveling through a loop, and/or creating loops that touch. So, beware.

Once you have practiced on some Open Universe puzzles, you are ready to take on the Advanced Galaxy Puzzles that add new obstacles and dimensions to the puzzles.

You may always re-do a puzzle up to four times in different colors, but the rules for overlapping, crossing through loops, or having loops touch apply. Your new color path cannot overlap or cross through loops made on the first path.

Wow! This Just In.
You can duel on puzzles in the book which are matched (opposite page puzzles are the same), but you can also duel on the same puzzle! Just start at opposite stars and follow the basic rules. You can cross over each other's lines, but not the loops of course! You could race to see who gets to the opposite star first, you compete for most loops before reaching the star, or you can play a timed contest to see who can get the most loops in the time allotted.

Open Universe Puzzles

• These are totally open puzzles. Two stars and an open course.

• You can just go for it and draw until you are tired, out of room, or violate a rule; or you can set your own time limit. The less time you give yourself, the more challenging the puzzle and points to score.

• You score 1 point for each loop with multipliers provided in the scoring grid for each puzzle based on the time limit you set for yourself. For example, the un-timed puzzler in figure 2 would earn 7 points--one point for each loop.

• In all cases of paired puzzles (most of the puzzles in this book), friends can duel each other on identical puzzles for highest score in specific time limit set by the puzzlers.

• The object, therefore, is to draw legal segments to travel from one star to the other making loops to change direction & score points. To complete the Open Universe Puzzle, a minimum of 1 loop is usually needed.

• The possible pathways, however, are as infinite as there are stars in the galaxy, and the number of loops is up to you and the time constraints you choose--assuming you don’t violate any rules, of course.

• You have seen the Open Universe puzzle in figure 2, as well as a sample solution to the puzzle.

• In an Open Universe puzzle like the one in figure 2, you can pretty much go wherever you want, as long as you follow the rules of changing direction. Look at figure 3 and see if you can spot some violations to the drawing rules. Sometimes they are not as noticeable as you might think. When you break a rule, the puzzle is over, and you score zero points.

• To test out your ability to spot errors, check out the puzzle in figure 3 and circle any and all the mistakes or rule violations you find. Check your results against the key in figure 4.

In all versions of Celestialis™ you will start at one star of your choice and draw to reach the other, your ending point if you will. Unlike most puzzles, however, the choice as to which should be the start and which the end is always up to you. [Note: Lefties may find selecting the lower most left star to their liking.]

(A) Traveling:
• You must draw along the X and Y axis only, no Z axis. In other words, you may only draw up or down and left and right--diagonal lines, generally, are not allowed.
• You may start by drawing from a star in any X or Y direction of your choice: up, down, left, or right. If you are a perfectionist, you may use a ruler or other straight edge to draw your line segments.
• The line segments you draw can be as long or as short as you like, but they should be as straight as possible -- which, technically, is the definition of a line segment -- and in the X or Y axes only.

(B) Switching Directions:
• When you are ready to switch directions, which is the key to earning points in a puzzle, you must follow a precise protocol outlined graphically in figure 1.
• So, when you are traveling in any one particular direction, there will be only two directions you can turn according to this protocol:

...when traveling from left to right, you can change directions up or down by looping (making a box) that takes you around and up or around and down...

...when traveling from right to left, you can change directions up or down by looping (making a box) that takes you around and up or around and down...

...when traveling from up to down, you can change directions right or left by looping (making a box) that takes you around and right or around and left...

...when traveling from down to up, you can change directions right or left by looping (making a box) that takes you around and right or around and left...

An example of a complete, legal drawing pathway is illustrated in figure 2.

(C) Size of the Loops:
• You should try to make your loops approximately the same size as about half the size of the stars as you can (within human limitations of course). A general rule to follow is that the two line segments needed to make the turn MUST be of equal length, while the segment that actually results from the two that cause the change in direction can be of any length. And, likewise, therefore, all of the direction changing segments should be of equal length in your entire puzzle.

(D) Crossing Over, Loops & Lines, Out of Bounds:
• You may cross over single lines but you may not pass through loops.
• Loops may not touch.
• Lines may not overlap and you may not go out of bounds or off the course.

• The idea of each puzzle is that you travel, by drawing line segments with your pen, pencil, colored pencil, crayon, marker, etc. through the open space between two stars.

• There are protocols, however, to the way in which you must travel when it comes to making turns called looping.

• Looping, in turn, earns you points--one point per loop.

• In some puzzles, there are ways to earn bonus points, however, there are always things that cause an abrupt end to the puzzle and no points.

• For added fun, or challenge as the case may be, you may challenge a friend to a duel (compete head to head against an opponent on the same puzzle--facing pages); or you can set yourself time limits of 1, 2, or 3 minutes. In timed conquests, you gain fewer points for loops the more time you allot. Of course, you do not have to place any time limits. Instead, try to score the largest number of loops humanly possible.

Every Celestialis™ puzzle has a unique puzzle name such as Puzzle 1.0, for example. You may submit your solution to the puzzle to our site for acknowledgment as the World Record Holder for a certain puzzle. Simply scan your solution and email it to us as a png or jpg of not more than 100K. The image must be good enough for us to view and verify on our computer screen. If we cannot verify it, we will be unable to post it to our site. Once verified, your solution with name you choose (must meet guidelines of good taste) will be posted on our site replacing a previous record holder.

NOTE: Timed puzzle records cannot be verified, so they will not be included unless they were completed at a hosted and approved event.
